The Ada Farmers’ Market opens June 19 and continues every Tuesday afternoon beginning at noon. “Kids in the Market” is looking for student volunteers.

In the Market, from noon until 4 pm until school resumes, the Market conducts a “Kids in the
...more Market” program with a variety of kids’ activities some of which include making newspaper pots, sidewalk chalk art, a scavenger hunt, bee hive observation, veggie toss, face painting, etc.  This year we also are bringing in “experts” to do origami, balloon art and “Yoga in the Market” for moms and kids.  These activities need hands on guidance and observation.

We are looking for high school students to fill this role as volunteers.  If interested, please contact Bob Kullgren at 897-4550.

This weekend, there are at least four Relay for Life events around West Michigan.  WZZM can only get out to one of them to be LIVE during their Friday evening newscast between 5:30 and 6:30pm.

There’s still time to sign up for Relay for Life.  The American Cancer Society is holding relays in Comstock Park, East Grand Rapids, Forest Hills, and Rockford on May 18th and 19th. 

The Comstock Park Relay begins at 3pm at the Comstock Park High School.

The Forest Hills Relay begins at an hour earlier at 2pm at the Cascade Library.

The Rockford Relay begins at 3pm at the North Rockford Middle School.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - Deb Myers will participate in this Saturday's Walk for Mental Health. She will then "walk" at Forest Hills Central High School's graduation on Monday in honor of her son, Zach.   

Zach would have graduated this year - but he took his own life two years ago. "I
...more think it's probably the worst thing a parent could ever experience," Myers said Monday, as she and other FHC students prepared for graduation and Saturday's walk.

The walk is sponsored by the Mental Health Foundation. Christy Buck of the Foundation said, "Research shows that the only way you're going to actually decrease the amount of suicides is by increasing awareness and by talking about it." The Walk is one way to get those conversations started.

Suicides have occurred in "every" school district in recent years, according to Buck. Rockford lost a senior student to suicide this past weekend - her's was one of several sudden, student deaths the district has endured in

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- WZZM and Meijer are pleased to recognize Forest Hills Central senior Taylor Thewes as our Meijer Scholar Athlete of the Week for the week of May 7th.

Taylor is a pitcher and infielder for the Ranger baseball team and owns a career pitching record of 18-2 at FHC.
...more He was a member of last year's varsity squad that reached the regional final round of the state playoffs.

Away from the diamond, Taylor is an amateur filmmaker and tells WZZM he plans to study film at Vassar College in New York state. His film entry "Winter's Flower" was the 2011 winner of the Kent District Library Teen Film Festival. Taylor tells us his favorite movies include most anything by Wes Anderson along with the classics "The Graduate" and "Annie Hall."

An excellent student, Taylor owns a 4.1 GPA and has been on the honor roll every semester of high school. He also serves as his senior class president.

Postal carriers in Ada, Cascade and Grand Rapids townships will be participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive on Saturday May 12th.  You are being asked to put your bags of non-perishable food by your mail box before regular mail delivery time, and your carrier
...more will collect the food.  Items collected will go to area food banks.

This is the 20th anniversary of the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive.  Last year, letter carriers collected more than 70 million pounds of food across the U.S.

CASCADE, MI - Construction has begun on the new AppleTree Christian Learning Center at 5038 Cascade Road SE. AppleTree are owner-operated daycare centers for children ages six weeks to school-age.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- It's a prom dream come true for a Grand Rapids-area teenager.

Jacqui Bunt is a junior at Forest Hills Central and her prom is Saturday night at Meijer Gardens.

She entered a national essay contest to win a plus-size prom makeover -- and she won!

Jacqui got her prom dress, and will have her hair, makeup and nails done saturday. She and her date will go to the prom in a limousine.

That's a big change from what she was originally going to do, which included wearing a hand-me-down dress from her mother.

"I was just going to re-use her pink dress," says Jacqui. "I was like, 'This'll work. Not a big fan of it, but it'll work.' I had vague plans in mind of just going, not really with anyone, kind of joining a group, using hand-me-downs. You know, this is completely different. It's SO awesome."
