The ladies are taking over The Pyramid Scheme on Saturday, March 3 with Grand Rapids' inaugural LadyFestGR. The event will feature all female line-ups of musicians, artists, comedians, workshops and other fun stuff. Organizer and musician Jes Kramer said that LadyFest
...more events first began in Olympia, Washington but her first experience was when she attended and performed at a LadyFest event in northern Michigan.

"It was the first time I'd ever heard of it. I did a bit of research and kept my eye open for other events in Michigan and nothing was turning up. I was kind of bummed out about that," she said.

To try to remedy the lack of LadyFests in West Michigan she posted a note on Facebook: "Just a little note, 'Hey, if I plan a LadyFest in Grand Rapids, who wants to help?' and there was an overwhelming response," she said.

She began to work with Tami VandenBerg and Sarah Scott, who were already planning...

Smokin’ Sleddog Records will present “An Evening Of Irish Music With Siusan O’Rourke And Zig Zeitler” on Friday March 9, 2012 at 8pm in the Koning Room at The Wealthy Theatre in Grand Rapids Michigan.

Smokin’ Sleddog Records Artists Zig Zeitler and Siusan O’Rourke are Mid Michigan’s
...more most versatile couple: performers, singers, songsmiths, multi-instrumentalists, cancer activists, purveyors of roots Americana and proprietors of the White Crow Conservatory, one of the state’s premier folk venues. But it’s the music of the Irish-American heartland by which Zig and Siusan are best known.

Siusan is the daughter of a first-generation Irish family from Brooklyn New York, one of countless American blossoms from a rich, ancient culture. Whether it’s one of her originals or a song from deep in the tradition, in Gaelic or English, Siusan O’Rourke’s dark alto voice is as enveloping as the Irish mist, and as warm as a peat fire. A seasoned and versatile musician, Zig Zeitler

If last week’s Chipotle restaurant commercial during the Grammy Awards taught us anything, it was that there is beauty in the small and simple, but most of all, we should not be afraid to start over again.

This is also how I would describe the burgeoning
...more startup by craft brewers who just voted on the nameHigh Five Co-op Brewery, taking an important next step in their effort to launch Michigan’s first co-op brewery.

The name plays off many popular and uniquely Michigan components: the notion that it takes two hands to make a high five, thus playing off the teamwork aspects of a co-operative, or simply the hand shape that is definitely an image every resident of our state understands.

If the venture is successful, and I believe they will be based on their methodical steps thus far, Grand Rapids’ High Five Co-op Brewery will join...

The boy standing center stage in the darkened auditorium, sporting goggles and an orange T-shirt, is holding what looks like a plate of foam. Standing next to him is a man in a white lab coat, who instructs him, “When you see something
...more happen, don’t react. No smiles, no laughter, no flinching, nothing—like rock.” The man lights the foam. It explodes in the boy’s face, but he doesn’t react. Out in the audience, the kids are screaming, and a few leap to their feet, applauding.

The scene is from a 2011 Vimeo clip, and the man prowling the stage in the white coat is Calvin chemistry professor Larry Louters. In 23 years of “Chem Demos,” he has had a few close calls but no real mishaps as he has revealed to thousands of area middle schoolers the scientific principles behind exploding soda bottles and flaming soap bubbles.

“That’s a special talent,” said chemistry professor Douglas Vander Griend. “People think
