The Grand Rapids Public Schools announced plans to bring back a summer program designed to feed hungry children. The district, with the help of the United States Department of Agriculture, started this program last year after receiving a $700,0000 federal grant.

UPDATE - GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The construction that will close the intersection of Fulton and Monroe has been delayed until Friday, February 24.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- You will need to plan another way through part of downtown Grand Rapids beginning Wednesday.

...more intersection at Fulton and Monroe will close for three weeks so crews can repair utility ducts and street lights.  The intersection will temporarily reopen with one lane heading in each direction beginning March 30th. 

This is the first phase of a five phase project for Fulton Street.  The second phase will close the intersection at Fulton and Ottawa beginning March 15th.  The sidewalks will stay open during the work. 

Construction should be finished by May.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - A construction crane that collapsed over a week ago at the Kent County Jail is being removed today.

The accident caused only a couple of minor injuries on February 11.  170 inmates had to be moved that day.

LANSING, Mich. (AP/WZZM) -- Former presidential candidate Herman Cain is joining Republican U.S. Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra during stops in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Ypsilanti and Troy.

Hoekstra and Cain will make their Grand Rapids appearance from 9-10 a.m. Thursday at the Kent

The Thursday campaign swing is intended to boost Hoekstra with tea partiers. Cain suspended his campaign Dec. 3 amid allegations of sexual misconduct, but remains popular with those voters.

Hoekstra currently leads seven other Republicans vying to take on Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow. But he may have a ways to go to catch his Democratic opponent.

An NBC News/Marist Poll released Wednesday showed 53% of 3,149 registered voters in Michigan backed Stabenow, compared with 32% for Hoekstra. Fifteen percent were undecided. Other candidates weren't included.

GEORGETOWN TWP., Mich. (WZZM) - Police in Ottawa County are asking for your help to find a man who robbed a gas station while wearing a mask from a horror movie.

The robbery happened just after 3:00am Wednesday at the Speedway on Baldwin Street in Georgetown Township.

Deputies sat the suspect flashed a knife and demanded cash while wearing a "Scream' mask from the movie series.

The suspect was also wearing black carhardt-style, waist-length coat with a hood, a dark green skull cap, black pants and black athletic shoes.

There has been a request submitted to the City of Grand Rapids to rezone some of the property at 2420 Coit Ave. NE (Riverside Elementary).  Included in the request is also a plans for an 8,000 sq feet expansion and parking lot

The Plan:The developer is GA Haan Development. The facility management company is Capital Health Group. With an 8,000 square foot addition the facility will include 45-50 residential rooms, a kitchen, dining facility, lounge and reception area.An existing parking lot will stay, the playground will be removed and an additional parking lot will be added to the east of the building off Oakwood street.Facility staff and the tenants will use the parking facilities. Some seniors will be independent enough to drive, other may use a bus. (The nearest bus stop will be on Coit) Seniors living in the units will not own the units.

I just heard from a good source at Kenowa Hills High School that Comstock Park High School was the winner in the Paczki Eating Contest at Plumb’s Supermarket yesterday after school.

Comstock Park School gets the $300 donation while Kenowa Hills and West Catholic each got a $200 school

Great job everyone! I’m sure some of these students won’t care to see another Paczki for some time.

The ladies are taking over The Pyramid Scheme on Saturday, March 3 with Grand Rapids' inaugural LadyFestGR. The event will feature all female line-ups of musicians, artists, comedians, workshops and other fun stuff. Organizer and musician Jes Kramer said that LadyFest
...more events first began in Olympia, Washington but her first experience was when she attended and performed at a LadyFest event in northern Michigan.

"It was the first time I'd ever heard of it. I did a bit of research and kept my eye open for other events in Michigan and nothing was turning up. I was kind of bummed out about that," she said.

To try to remedy the lack of LadyFests in West Michigan she posted a note on Facebook: "Just a little note, 'Hey, if I plan a LadyFest in Grand Rapids, who wants to help?' and there was an overwhelming response," she said.
