MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)- A Toys For Tots chapter on the lakeshore is looking for donated warehouse space to keep the program going.  The Muskegon Toys For Tots chapter is 20-years old.  It has been operating from one building in Muskegon for several years.  But recently the building was sold
...more and the new owner says the organization needs to move out.

The group is looking for about 5,000 square feet of donated space that is secure, has a bathroom and is close to downtown.  The space will be used to store and sort donation.

Last Christmas the Muskegon chapter gave away more than 11,000 toys and volunteers expect that number to keep growing.

Beth Ackley with Toys For Tots Muskegon says, "We started small and now we need a bigger space.  We store the toys there, we collect the toys there, we distribute our toys there.  We think there is a real need here in Muskegon County just by the numbers that we give."

The group hopes to have a new space to move

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - Thousands of Michigan's unemployed will no longer receive federal benefits.

The government officially ended the Extended Benefits (EB) program Saturday,  because Michigan's unemployment rate dropped below 10 percent on January 28, 2012.

The change
...more is a result of legislation passed by the Obama Administration last December.

According to state officials, nearly 267,000 workers filed for unemployment last month; about 11 percent of them are losing federal support. Kristy Borgman of Muskegon is one of them.

"I bought my house on June first and lost my job on June fourth," Borgman said.

The 25-year-old  worked as a medical assistant at Apple Family Medicine in Ravenna. Since June, she's been relying on her fiancé, temp work, and an extended weekly benefits check of $243 from the federal government. Saturday, she woke up knowing that check would never come in the mail again.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. (WZZM)- If Muskegon County continues to miss big snow storms like the rest of the state, the budget savings for the road commission could be significant.

Laurie Peterson, the Maintenance Superintendent for the Muskegon County Road Commission, says she's only
...more used

one quarter of her winter snow removal budget. Peterson says it is too early to commit the projected savings to other projects like chip sealing or filling of potholes on county roads.

At the road commission Friday the massive snow-blowing machine called "Big Green" was parked where it has been all winter. "Big Green" is often called on to blow big snow drifts from roads near Montague. At one time it was used at an Air Force Base to clear runways. The fact that it has not been needed this year is one sign of a mild winter.

When there's no snow, employees spend their days doing spring projects like clearing out and improving drainage ditches and removing trees

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM)- Muskegon is one step closer to getting its own brewery.

Thursday night the city planning commission approved re-writing a zoning ordinance to allow brewpubs, breweries, wineries and distilleries.  That clears the way for Unruly Brewing Company to potentially
...more open this summer.

Downtown development officials say the beer business is booming in Holland, Grand Rapids and other areas so now is their chance to bring the growing industry to Muskegon.

Jeff Jacobsen, the co-owner of Unruly Brewing Company says, "The city's been really great about working with us."  We're just excited to finally bring some craft brew here to Muskegon."

UPDATE 10PM: MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM)- The acting superintendent of Muskegon Heights Schools says the district will not close.  Dave Sipka answered questions from concerned parents Wednesday night. About 250 people showed up for the forum.

Sipka says, "I think that represents
...more that there are a lot of people who care about what's going on in Muskegon Heights."

The state is reviewing the cash strapped district's request for an emergency manager.

During Wednesday night's meeting, Sipka also told parents that cuts to employee pay and benefits are a necessary evil and every board member will stay through the transition.

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. (WZZM)- An event Wednesday night is intended to give parents in the Muskegon Heights School District the latest information on a possible state take over of the district, and district finances. That decision on a state financial manager is likely weeks away. But according to acting district
