GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- At the Ford Presidential Museum, students are learning about a relationship formed 80 years ago.

"Their relationship formed as college freshman in 1931 playing football. Both were stars in their own right. One was from Detroit one from Grand Rapids," says Buzz
...more Thomas, grandson of Willis Ward.

President Gerald R. Ford joined the University of Michigan's football team and despite a racist era became best friends with Willis Ward. Ward was a talented black player. Buzz Thomas remembers how his grandfather talked about Ford.

"He was always tremendously supportive of Gerald Ford, and defend him if anyone was to criticize him of anything."

Willis defended Ford, just as Ford stuck up for him on the field when Willis was benched for being black.  A team from the south, Georgia Tech, said it wouldn't play if Willis was on the field.

Thomas says, "Gerald Ford said 'I won't play either. I quit.' Willis Ward convinced him

ROCKFORD, Mich. (WZZM) -- Governor Rick Snyder says his plan is a financial boost to public schools, but Rockford Superintendent Mike Shibler says after all the cuts over the last several years -- adding 1% -- is a drop in the bucket.

Shibler says, "It's a 1% increase over what we
...more receive today, which is $300 less than what we were receiving in 2008."

Shibler says in 2008 the state gave the district $7,300 per student.  Following cuts, Rockford now has $7,000 per pupil.  Snyder's increase boosts them to $7,100 a student.  That's still $200 shy of the funding they had in 2008.

Shibler says, "They need to keep some money in the rainy day fund. Those are the Governor's words. Well, it's pouring. The rainy day fund is pouring for public schools."

Shibler says the district will also lose money from the all-day kindergarten funding requirement. Currently, the state pays for a full kindergarten day -- even though students go for a half the day. The

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Religious groups in the area are upset about a regulation that requires insurers to provide coverage for contraceptives.

Some religious institutions, or religious non profits, don't believe in supporting contraceptives, and feel the law infringes on their
...more freedom of religion.

Locally the Grand Rapids Diocese, released this statement from Bishop Hurley.

"The recent decision to uphold the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) insurance ruling is a great disappointment. The HHS ruling mandates religious people and institutions to act in violation of their consciences in providing certain health care benefits (contraception, sterilization and abortifacients) as part of health care plans offered to employees of Catholic agencies and institutions which serve the church and community.

The implications of this mandate raise serious questions about the ability of our Catholic institutions of health care, charities and

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) -- Calling the City of Grand Rapids could become easier. The city is considering the addition of a 3-1-1 Customer Service Directory.

The number would streamline finding a department. Right now there are about 200 phone numbers to different departments. City
...more officials hope it would make it easier for residents to reach the right department by dialing 3-1-1.

The city would use 9-1-1 for emergencies, and 3-1-1- for all non emergencies.

Residents can use the number to pay a bill, ask for information, or report an issue. The calls would be tracked and monitored.

City officials are calculating the cost benefit to see if 3-1-1 is a good option.
