ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow visited the Lakeshore for the third time in about six months Monday.

Stabenow visited the facilities at Zeeland Farm Services, a manufacturer of grain and soy products.

She unveiled a new initiative called 'Grow It Here,
...more Make It Here,' promoting alternatives like soy over oil, as a base for product materials like plastics.

If approved, the initiative would provide a 30% tax credit to new or expanding businesses that focus on bio-manufacturing and research.

There are about 80 companies throughout the state that could benefit, like ZFW. Stabenow says the plan could create upwards of 100,000 new jobs.

"We are looking at what's called bio-based manufacturing. Using agricultural based products like soybeans to replace oil in plastics and its happening right here in Zeeland... the forefront both in Michigan and internationally," she said. "It allows us to create jobs with our strengths

ZEELAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- Don't be surprised if your child's MEAP scores are lower this year.

For the 2011-2012 school year, the state changed the grading standards to make it more challenging for students.

"They're changing the number of questions you need to have correct
...more in order to reach that proficient category." said Roosevelt Elementary principal Judy Tuttle.

Tuttle says her school and the Zeeland Public Schools district do great on MEAP. But the new regulations will significantly impact the number of students listed as 'proficient.'

In the past, students achieved 'proficiency' by getting around 40% of the questions correct.  Now students must achieve 70%.

"We're going to go from 96% and drop down to the 30% range," Tuttle said. "It's a significant jump and it's going to look very different when parents see MEAP scores this year."

The choice made by state leaders to raise the bar means Michigan is one of three states

...more met with praise and national attention, but there is at least one parent concerned about student safety.

"iPads could be great," he said. "But with that iPad we need to have some protection in line, so that parents can do their job as a parent and provide adequate tools for learning."

When used at school, the iPads are part of a network with content filter that restricts distracting or

HOLLAND, Mich. (WZZM) -- As companies recover from the recession there is a much larger emphasis on hiring and doing so quickly. It's a rapid change from a few years ago, and part of the reason why temporary employment agencies are starting to say that business is booming.
