GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM)- The largest annual fundraiser to benefit Friends & Families of Cystic Fibrosis happened Saturday night.

...more included tickets to the Griffins, Whitecaps, the Sprint Cup Race and a Tigers game in Chicago, went for about $1,400. The winning bidder will also get a one night stay at the Hotel Felix.

Teri Harmon knows. "When I go in, literally the next day and the day after I don't have pain," she says.  "It's amazing."

Teri uses the cold water plunge at the MAC in Grand Rapids where she is a group fitness instructor. She's also well informed on the research behind cold water plunging.

"There are some actual chemical responses that happen," she says.  "Norepinephrine is increased, which is a natural painkiller. It does over time stimulate the immune system."

Which is why Harmon says it's recommended for anyone with arthritis or injuries.

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) - The Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center which opened in 2005 now includes the Frederick Meijer Heart and Vascular Institute.  It has become a landmark on the Medical Mile. For Fred Meijer creating that medical building was personal.

"Fred had some heart surgery
...more and so I think that's why we spent a lot of time talking about how he could help us and how he could help us in his fight for heart disease," says Spectrum Health President Richard Breon.

But Breon says Fred Meijer's contributions didn't stop there, "He also looked at cancer. He was the lead gift in the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion. He was one of the lead gifts in the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. So he really was someone who was interested in health care on a broad array."
